How to Store Research Compounds
Storage is the most common uncontrolled variable in peptide research. A lot that arrives at 99% purity can lose integrity in a week of poor handling, and the resulting data drift looks like a biological effect rather than a storage error.

Lyophilized versus reconstituted
Lyophilized powder
Freeze-dried material is the stable state. Kept sealed, dry, cold, and dark, most sequences hold specification for extended periods. The main enemies are moisture ingress and repeated warming to room temperature, so let a vial equilibrate before opening to avoid condensing water inside it.
Reconstituted solution
Once in solution, the clock speeds up considerably. Refrigerate, keep dark, and treat the working stock as short-lived. Bacteriostatic water extends usable life relative to sterile water because it suppresses microbial growth, but it does not stop chemical degradation.
The four things that degrade material
- Heat — accelerates hydrolysis and deamidation across the sequence
- Moisture — hygroscopic powders take up water and destabilize in storage
- Light — photo-oxidation affects tryptophan, tyrosine, and methionine residues
- Freeze–thaw cycling — each cycle stresses the peptide; aliquot to avoid it
A workable storage routine
Aliquot on the day of reconstitution into single-use volumes. Label every aliquot with compound, lot, concentration, diluent, and date — not just the compound name. Keep a written temperature log if a freezer is shared, because a single defrost cycle can silently invalidate months of stock.
Never re-freeze a thawed aliquot to reuse later. The cost of a discarded aliquot is far lower than the cost of an unexplained result.

Inspect insulated packing on arrival and move lyophilized material to cold storage promptly. Record the receipt date alongside the lot number so storage duration is part of the record.

- Does bacteriostatic water preserve a peptide indefinitely?
- No. It suppresses microbial growth but does not prevent chemical degradation such as hydrolysis or oxidation.
